Emma^7 Remsen Van Wicklen (Daniel^6,
John^5. Jacob^4, Garret^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1
Jeppes), b. 1856, NY 2.
Leslie^8 Hedger, b. abt 1879, CA
Source: 1860 US Census for Oyster Bay, Queens, NY lists Daniel Van Wicklen, 45, carpenter, with Hannah, 41, Catherine, 13, Daniel, 11, Margaretta, 9, John, 7, and Emma, 5. 1870 US Census for Brooklyn, Ward 6, Kings, NY lists Andrew Van Wicklen, 31, Clerk in store with wife, Margt, 32, keeps house, and dau. Hattie, 6 and son, Frank, 4. Also, Andrew's mother, Hanna, 51, at home, and the following brothers and sisters of Andrew: Catherine, 21, dress maker, Margaretta, 18, attends store, Daniel, 20, milk route, and Emma, 14. (Daniel^6, Andrew's father, drowns while clamming in Oyster Bay in 1861.) 1880 US Census for San Francisco, CA lists Henry E. Hedger, 40, B. Eng (parents b. Eng), capitalist, with wife, Emma, 30, b. NY (parents b. NY), keeping house, and Harry, 3, b. CA, and Leslie, 1, b. CA. Also in household are Mary McEntee, 24, b. Ireland (parents b. Ireland), servant, and Katie McEntee, 22, b. Ireland (parents b. Ireland), servant, and Frank Endlich, 30, b. Germany (parents b. Germany), servant and coachman. (Three discrepancies here to be concerned about: 1) Is Emma Van Wicklen's husband named Henry E. Hedger or Richard W. Hedger? 2) Emma is listed here as 30, yet she was b. in 1856; and 3) Harry Hedger is allegedly b. in Suffolk, NY yet listed here as b. CA. Quite possible that all these are mistakes of the census taker combined with misrepresentations, perhaps. Hopefully additional research will straighten things out.)
